At last science is starting to confirm our view that the human ear/brain system is extremely sensitive to the micro timing and overall time coherence of reproduced sound, and that this sensitivity is the source of many of the troubling problems in high end audio. A recent paper published in the Feb. 23 06 issue of the British journal Nature describes a big advance by scientists at Carnegie Mellon University in how sound is encoded by the ear for transmission to the brain. It turns out that the neural code at the auditory nerve bundle going to the brain represents sound at a discrete set of time points or "spikes" in which the acoustic components are represented only in terms of their timing relationships with each other.

The micro-timing of these "spikes" encodes the whole range of audible sounds. This mechanism necessarily makes the hearing system extremely sensitive to time coherence and timing in all sounds. This clear implication of the research results is exactly what we have concluded is the cause of much of the perceived differences between live and reproduced sound. This is also contrary to the conventional received wisdom in hearing science that very small timing or phase shift errors are inaudible.
